'Zootopia 2' became 2025's highest-grossing domestic release with $424.2M and $1.85B worldwide, surpassing 'A Minecraft Movie' and marking Disney's second consecutive year atop the box office.

Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Zootopia 2" has officially become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2025, surpassing Warner Bros.' "A Minecraft Movie" with a current total of $424.2 million at the North American box office . The sequel to the 2016 Oscar-winning original has also amassed a staggering $1.85 billion worldwide, cementing its status as a global phenomenon and marking Disney's second consecutive year leading the domestic box office following 2024's "Inside Out 2”.

The film, directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, reunites audiences with beloved characters Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they investigate a series of mysterious disappearances in the Rodentian quarter, a miniature district of Zootopia. New additions to the voice cast include Ke Huy Quan as Gary the snake and Shakira reprising her role as Gazelle with a new original song.

"This milestone is a testament to the enduring power of great storytelling and the incredible connection audiences have with these characters," said Disney Studios president Alan Bergman in a statement. The film's success extends beyond box office receipts, with merchandise sales already surpassing $500 million globally.

The achievement comes amid a robust year for animation, with "A Minecraft Movie" finishing second domestically with $398 million, followed by Universal's "Despicable Me 4" ($360 million) and "Kung Fu Panda 4" ($347 million). The top five domestic releases of 2025 were all animated features, underscoring the family audience's return to theaters in force.

Analysts attribute "Zootopia 2's" success to its universal themes, timely social commentary, and the expanded world-building that deepens the original's exploration of prejudice and coexistence. "They've taken what worked about the first film and built upon it in meaningful ways," said box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "The Rodentian sequence alone is worth the price of admission."
