What a live Blackjack round looks like from start to finish

What a Live Blackjack Round Looks Like Start to Finish

Most people know the basic objective of Blackjack. Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going bust. But if you've never sat at a live dealer table before, it's worth understanding what it actually involves before you start. The structure of a live round is straightforward, but it moves at a set pace with defined stages you'll need to follow.

When you choose to play Blackjack in real time, you're joining a table hosted by a trained dealer working from a dedicated studio. Physical cards, professional lighting and multiple camera angles are all part of how the game operates. Unlike automated Blackjack, where software generates outcomes instantly, the live version runs at a human pace. Cards are dealt by hand, and the round follows a sequence that you can see unfold on screen.

How a round begins

Before any cards are dealt, there's a betting window. A countdown timer appears on screen, giving you a set number of seconds to place your bet. Once that timer closes, no further bets can be added or adjusted. The dealer then begins dealing.

Each player at the table, and the dealer, receives two cards. In most live Blackjack games, your cards are dealt face up. The dealer takes one card face up and one face down. That face-down card is called the hole card and won't be revealed until later in the round.

Your turn to act

Once the initial deal is complete, each player takes their turn in sequence. You'll see your hand total displayed on screen automatically, calculated by OCR software that reads each card as it's dealt. From there, you have a set time to make your decision.

Your options at this point are:

Hit - take another card.

Stand - keep the hand you have.

Double down - place an additional bet equal to your original and receive one more card only.

Split - if your first two cards are of equal value, you can split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet.

Some tables also offer a surrender option, which lets you fold the hand and recover half your original bet. Not all live tables include this, so it's worth checking the table rules before you sit down.

If you hit and your total goes over 21, you bust and the round ends for you at that point. You don't need to wait for other players to finish.

The dealer's turn

Once all players have acted, the dealer reveals their hole card. From here, the dealer follows fixed rules, not their own judgement. In most live Blackjack games, the dealer must hit on any total of 16 or below and stand on 17 or above. Some tables use a "soft 17" rule, where the dealer also hits on a soft 17 (a hand containing an Ace counted as 11). This rule is usually stated in the game information panel.

The dealer draws cards until they either reach a standing total or bust.

How the round is settled

Each player's hand is then compared against the dealer's final total. If your total is higher than the dealer's without exceeding 21, you receive a payout of 1:1 on your bet. A natural Blackjack, an Ace and a ten-value card on your opening two cards, typically pays at 3:2. If you and the dealer finish on the same total, the round is a push and your original bet is returned.

If the dealer busts, all players who haven't already busted receive a payout.

Once the round is settled, the table resets for the next hand. Cards may be shuffled again depending on the number of decks in use and the point in the shoe at which the cut card appears.

Each round is independent. What happened in the previous hand has no bearing on the next. The cards don't carry memory, and no pattern from an earlier round can reliably inform what comes next. Outcomes are determined entirely by the order in which the cards fall.
